Dow Jumps 200 Points; Goldman Sachs Earnings Top Views

U.S. stocks traded higher this morning, with the Dow Jones index gaining around 200 points on Thursday.

Following the market opening Thursday, the Dow traded up 0.41% to 49,352.44 while the NASDAQ surged 0.78% to 23,655.17. The S&P 500 also rose, gaining, 0.55% to 6,964.89.

Leading and Lagging Sectors

Information technology shares gained by 1.4% on Thursday.

In trading on Thursday, health care stocks dipped by 1%.

Top Headline

The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. (NYSE:GS) reported upbeat earnings for the fourth quarter.

The company posted quarterly earnings of $14.01 per share which beat the analyst consensus estimate of $11.65 per share. The company reported quarterly sales of $13.454 billion which missed the analyst consensus estimate of $13.791 billion.

  • Callan JMB Inc. (NASDAQ:CJMB) shares shot up 244% to $3.8499 after the company announced it has signed a strategic teaming agreement with Biostax Corp d/b/a Attune Biotech to provide comprehensive federal oversight services.
  • Shares of Springview Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:SPHL) got a boost, surging 176% to $6.35. Springview Holdings Ltd. announced a strategic partnership with Jiangsu GSO New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. to introduce solar and green-energy solutions for residential housing in Singapore.
  • authID Inc. (NASDAQ:AUID) shares were also up, gaining 91% to $1.89 after the company announced an integration with ServiceNow.

Equities Trading DOWN

  • MetaVia Inc. (NASDAQ:MTVA) shares dropped 44% to $3.15 after the company announced the pricing of $8.1 million underwritten public offering.
  • Shares of Inspire Veterinary Partners, Inc. (NASDAQ:IVP) were down 38% to $0.0510. Inspire Veterinary Partners shares jumped over 256% on Wednesday after the company announced filed a Certificate of Amendment to increase its authorized Class A common stock from 100 million to 700 million shares.
  • TryHard Holdings Limited (NASDAQ:THH) was down, falling 35% to $20.54 as the company announced it has entered into a Memorandum of Cooperation with STAR PARTY HK LIMITED to explore the establishment of a joint venture in Japan, potentially affecting investor sentiment.

Commodities

In commodity news, oil traded down 4.6% to $59.15 while gold traded down 0.5% at $4,611.40.

Silver traded down 2.3% to $89.285 on Thursday, while copper fell 2% to $5.9385.

Euro zone

European shares were mixed today. The eurozone's STOXX 600 rose 0.4%, while Spain's IBEX 35 Index fell 0.3%. London's FTSE 100 gained 0.4%, Germany's DAX rose 0.2% and France's CAC 40 slipped 0.1% during the session.

Asia Pacific Markets

Asian markets closed lower on Thursday, with Japan's Nikkei falling 0.42%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index declining 0.28% and China's Shanghai Composite falling 0.33%.

Economics

  • U.S. import prices increased 0.1% year-over-year in November, while export prices rose 3.3% year-over-year.
  • U.S. initial jobless claims declined by 9,000 from the previous week to 198,000 in the week ending Jan. 10, versus market estimates of 215,000.
  • The NY Empire State Manufacturing Index surged to 7.7 in January versus a revised reading of -3.7 in December, and topping market estimates of 1.
  • The Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index jumped 21.4 points to a reading of 12.6 in January.
