Crude Oil Falls Sharply; US Initial Jobless Claims Decline

U.S. stocks traded higher midway through trading, with the Nasdaq Composite gaining around 1% on Thursday.

The Dow traded up 0.80% to 49,543.16 while the NASDAQ surged 1.03% to 23,714.62. The S&P 500 also rose, gaining, 0.74% to 6,977.92.

Information technology shares gained by 1.5% on Thursday.

In trading on Thursday, health care stocks dipped by 1.5%.

Top Headline

U.S. initial jobless claims declined by 9,000 from the previous week to 198,000 in the week ending Jan. 10, versus market estimates of 215,000.

  • Callan JMB Inc. (NASDAQ:CJMB) shares shot up 208% to $3.45 after the company announced it has signed a strategic teaming agreement with Biostax Corp d/b/a Attune Biotech to provide comprehensive federal oversight services.
  • Shares of Springview Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:SPHL) got a boost, surging 290% to $8.96. Springview Holdings Ltd. announced a strategic partnership with Jiangsu GSO New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. to introduce solar and green-energy solutions for residential housing in Singapore.
  • authID Inc. (NASDAQ:AUID) shares were also up, gaining 99% to $1.98 after the company announced an integration with ServiceNow.

Equities Trading DOWN

  • MetaVia Inc. (NASDAQ:MTVA) shares dropped 40% to $3.26 after the company announced the pricing of $8.1 million underwritten public offering.
  • Shares of Caledonia Mining Corporation PLC (NYSE:CMCL) were down 19% to $26.39 after the company announced the pricing of upsized $125 million offering of 5.875% convertible senior notes due 2033.
  • TryHard Holdings Limited (NASDAQ:THH) was down, falling 41% to $19.00 as the company announced it has entered into a Memorandum of Cooperation with STAR PARTY HK LIMITED to explore the establishment of a joint venture in Japan, potentially affecting investor sentiment.

Commodities

In commodity news, oil traded down 4.7% to $59.08 while gold traded down 0.4% at $4,618.80.

Silver traded down 1.1% to $90.405 on Thursday, while copper fell 1.5% to $5.9660.

Euro zone

European shares were mixed today. The eurozone's STOXX 600 rose 0.39%, while Spain's IBEX 35 Index fell 0.21%. London's FTSE 100 gained 0.56%, Germany's DAX rose 0.01% and France's CAC 40 slipped 0.23% during the session.

Asia Pacific Markets

Asian markets closed lower on Thursday, with Japan's Nikkei falling 0.42%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index declining 0.28% and China's Shanghai Composite falling 0.33%.

Economics

  • U.S. import prices increased 0.1% year-over-year in November, while export prices rose 3.3% year-over-year.
  • U.S. initial jobless claims declined by 9,000 from the previous week to 198,000 in the week ending Jan. 10, versus market estimates of 215,000.
  • The NY Empire State Manufacturing Index surged to 7.7 in January versus a revised reading of -3.7 in December, and topping market estimates of 1.
  • The Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index jumped 21.4 points to a reading of 12.6 in January.
