Amazon announced plans to expand its Same-Day Delivery service for fresh groceries to additional communities in 2026, based on customer feedback. The company currently offers grocery delivery in over 5,000 U.S. cities and towns.
The e-commerce giant will open more than 100 new Whole Foods Market stores over the next few years and expand its Whole Foods Market Daily Shop format. Amazon acquired Whole Foods Market in 2017, and the chain now operates more than 550 locations.
Amazon will close its Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh physical stores, converting various locations to Whole Foods Market stores. The company stated it has not created a distinctive customer experience with the right economic model for large-scale expansion of its Amazon-branded grocery stores.
The company reported it is one of the top three grocers in the U.S., with over $150 billion in gross sales and more than 150 million customers shopping groceries annually. Household essentials represent one-third of units sold on Amazon.com.
Amazon introduced perishables to its Same-Day Delivery service in 2025, allowing customers to order fresh food alongside other products for delivery within hours. Perishable grocery sales through this service increased 40 times since January 2025.
The company is testing Amazon Now, an ultra-fast delivery option that delivers essential items including fresh food in approximately 30 minutes. This service is available in several cities.
Whole Foods Market Daily Shop, a smaller store format focused on grab-and-go meals and everyday essentials, operates in five locations. Amazon plans to open five additional Daily Shop locations by the end of 2026.
Amazon's Just Walk Out technology, developed through its Go stores, now operates in over 360 third-party locations across five countries and more than 40 North American fulfillment centers.
