Australia Cracks Down On Gaming Platforms Over Safety Risks

The notices require companies to detail how they identify, prevent, and respond to risks such as sexual exploitation, radicalization, cyberbullying and hate speech.

The regulator is also seeking clarity on whether platform systems, staffing and design align with the government's Basic Online Safety Expectations.

Concerns Over Grooming And Radicalization Pathways

Julie Inman Grant, Australia's eSafety Commissioner, said gaming platforms often serve as initial contact points between offenders and children.

Grant noted that offenders frequently shift interactions from public gaming environments to private messaging services after establishing contact.

According to eSafety research, roughly 90% of Australian children aged 8 to 17 engage in online gaming, making these platforms highly attractive targets for bad actors.

Reports Highlight Misuse Of Popular Platforms

Authorities pointed to multiple reports of harmful content across these platforms. These include extremist-themed gameplay, recreations of violent incidents and the presence of far-right communities.

Examples cited include Islamic State-inspired content and simulated mass violence scenarios in games, as well as the use of gaming ecosystems to circulate propaganda or normalize extremist ideologies.

Compliance Requirements and Financial Penalties

Gaming companies must respond to the notices and comply with Australia's Online Safety Codes and Standards, which mandate safeguards against illegal content, including child exploitation material and pro-terror content.

Failure to comply could result in penalties of up to $49.5 million per breach.

Additional enforcement measures include fines reaching $825,000 per day for non-compliance with transparency reporting obligations.

Focus On Stronger Safeguards and Accountability

As part of ongoing efforts, eSafety is also assessing prior commitments made by platforms like Roblox, including stricter age verification, default privacy settings for minors, and limits on adult-child interactions.

Bloomberg reported Wednesday that Roblox has agreed to settlements with attorneys general in three U.S. states over child-safety concerns.

Under the agreements with West Virginia, Alabama, and Nevada, the company committed to tightening safeguards to limit harmful interactions on its platform. The settlements total $35.8 million, with a portion allocated to funding child safety education initiatives.

Goldman Sachs maintains Roblox with a Buy and lowers the price target from $140 to $125.

RBLX Stock Price Activity: Roblox shares were down 6.81% at $55.57 at the time of publication on Thursday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
