U.S. stocks traded lower midway through trading, with the Nasdaq Composite falling over 1% on Tuesday.

The Dow traded up 0.20% to 49,268.47 while the NASDAQ fell 1.24% to 24,578.38. The S&P 500 also fell, dropping, 0.65% to 7,127.22.

Leading and Lagging Sectors

Energy shares jumped by 1.3% on Tuesday.

In trading on Tuesday, materials stocks fell by 1.3%.

Top Headline

General Motors (NYSE:GM) reported better-than-expected first-quarter financial results.

General Motors reported quarterly earnings of $3.70 per share which beat the analyst consensus estimate of $2.62 per share. The company reported quarterly sales of $43.624 billion which beat the analyst consensus estimate of $43.542 billion.

  • Kforce Inc (NYSE:KFRC) shares shot up 37% to $43.81 after the company reported better-than-expected first-quarter financial results.
  • Shares of Omnicell Inc (NASDAQ:OMCL) got a boost, surging 21% to $45.40 following upbeat quarterly earnings.
  • Aterian Inc (NASDAQ:ATER) shares were also up, gaining 63% to $1.07 after the company agreed to sell its e-commerce brand portfolio for $18 million to Trademark Global.

Equities Trading DOWN

  • Soligenix, Inc. (NASDAQ:SNGX) shares dropped 68% to $0.46 after the company announced interim results from the Phase 3 FLASH2 trial evaluating HyBryte™ in the treatment of Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma.
  • Shares of Rambus Inc (NASDAQ:RMBS) were down 23% to $109.26 after the company reported worse-than-expected first-quarter adjusted EPS results.
  • Erasca Inc (NASDAQ:ERAS) was down, falling 48% to $9.99. Erasca said it intends to vigorously contest allegations made by Revolution Medicines.

Commodities

In commodity news, oil traded up 3.2% to $99.48 while gold traded down 2.2% at $4,591.50.

Silver traded down 2.9% to $72.845 on Tuesday, while copper fell 0.8% to $5.9715.

Euro zone

European shares were mostly lower today. The eurozone's STOXX 600 fell 0.29%, while Spain's IBEX 35 Index rose 0.58%. London's FTSE 100 fell 0.1%, Germany's DAX fell 0.2% and France's CAC 40 slipped 0.2% during the session.

Asia Pacific Markets

Asian markets closed lower on Tuesday, with Japan's Nikkei 225 falling 1.02%, China's Shanghai Composite slipping 0.19%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index falling 0.95% and India's BSE Sensex dipping 0.54%.

Economics

  • The S&P Cotality Case-Shiller Home Price Index increased 0.9% year-over-year in February, easing from 1.2% in the previous month.
  • The FHFA house price index came in unchanged in February, compared to market estimates of a 0.2% increase.
  • U.S. private-sector employers added an average of 39,250 jobs a week during the four weeks ending April 11.
