There's a new leader for annual revenue among American companies based on rankings for the 2025 year. Here's a look at the new leader and the top 10 overall revenue-producing American companies.

Amazon Vs. Walmart

For the past 13 years, Walmart (NASDAQ:WMT) has topped the Fortune 500 list of the top American companies by annual revenue. In 2025, Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) took the crown from the retail giant for the first time.

Amazon, which first appeared on the Fortune 500 list in 2002, was the top American company by revenue in 2025 with a total of around $717 billion, as reported by the New York Post.

This total narrowly topped the $713 billion produced by Walmart.

Amazon's revenue was up 12% year-over-year in 2025, while Walmart had revenue growth of 5% year-over-year.

Both Amazon and Walmart had strong years with several records set in 2025.

While Amazon takes the crown as the top company by annual revenue, there’s a small catch. Walmart remains the largest retailer based on retail revenue. Of Amazon's annual total, $129 billion came from its Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud services.

When considering which company is the largest retailer, Walmart has the highest global annual revenue from retail, while Amazon has higher overall revenue and higher ecommerce retail sales.
