Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) on Sunday slammed President Donald Trump‘s efforts to promote offshore drilling in California despite no relief from high gas prices.
Trump Illegally Revived Offshore Drilling
In a post on X, Newsom’s press office quoted a post by the White House’s Rapid Response 47 handle, which shared a video of Energy Secretary Chris Wright touting increased production due to the Sable Offshore Corp. (NYSE:SOC) pipeline off the Santa Barbara coast.
Newsom’s Press Office alleged that the President “illegally” invoked the Defense Production Act to “revive a dirty offshore drilling platform,” and his administration was now bragging about increased production.
The post then outlined a “problem” since the Sable pipeline was restarted. “CA gas prices INCREASED +10,” the post said, adding that the “US gas prices INCREASED +16%” since it began operations.
The Defense Production Act was enacted in 1950 and gives the President powers to authorize companies to produce goods essential for defense.
In a separate post on X, Newsom’s press office also alleged that the administration was trying to help recover Sable’s stock prices. “We are cabinet secretaries and we will record as many infomercials as it takes for Sable’s stock price to recover,” the post said.
Newsom had earlier called Wright a “Big Oil Shill” and criticized the high gas prices in the U.S. He then said Wright should urge Trump to end the Iran war.
Notably, Gas prices further fell on Sunday, with the national average price at $4.174/gallon, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA). Prices in California remained below the $6/gallon mark following weeks of high costs, with the average price in the state at $5.9020/gallon.
JB Pritzker Slams Trump
Gov. Jay Robert ‘JB' Pritzker (D-IL) slammed Trump earlier as gas prices were above $5/gallon in multiple states. The Illinois governor also slammed Trump’s renovations to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, which the President said were complete after workers cleaned it and repainted it to the "American flag blue" shade.
