Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang posted on X for the first time on Friday, publicly advocating for frontier open AI models alongside closed models as a pillar of safety, innovation and national AI sovereignty.
Huang said he is sharing a letter signed by Nvidia on why open models matter. The letter argues open models strengthen safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and diffusion, and enable sovereignty, while saying the world needs both frontier closed models and frontier open models.
Huang Calls Chinese AI Models ‘Excellent’
On Thursday, Huang described Chinese AI models as "excellent" and dismissed fears they threaten U.S. companies. He said the models broaden AI adoption and lift demand for Nvidia’s chips, data centers, and computing infrastructure. Huang urged Washington to drop "science fiction" fears about AI regulation, arguing that discouraging AI adoption is the bigger risk. He made the comments in an interview and called for broader industry input before imposing restrictions.
Bessent Warns on ‘Industrial-Scale’ Distillation
On Wednesday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that Chinese AI firms could face sanctions for using "industrial-scale distillation attacks" that infringe on U.S. intellectual property. He said open-source AI should not be an "open season" on American IP. Huang has said distillation is a fundamental part of AI development and poses no threat to U.S. companies, arguing that learning from AI and other knowledge sources is essential to intelligence. Huang’s comments contrast with Bessent’s stance.
