Tema ETFs launched the Tema Healthcare AI ETF (NASDAQ:HLTH), a new actively managed fund designed to capture investment opportunities at the intersection of artificial intelligence and healthcare. The ETF, launched on Tuesday aims to provide focused exposure to companies using AI across drug discovery, diagnostics, robotic-assisted care and other healthcare technologies, as investors increasingly look beyond semiconductor-focused AI plays.
Key fund details
- 1. Management style: Actively managed
- 2. Gross expense ratio: 0.75%
- 3. Portfolio focus: Companies using AI in drug discovery, diagnostics, robotic-assisted procedures, clinical applications and patient care technologies
- 4. Top Holdings: 10X Genomics Inc (NASDAQ:TXG), Cytokinetics, Inc. (NASDAQ:CYTK), Illumina Inc (NASDAQ:ILMN).
- 5. Portfolio manager: Dr. David Song
The launch comes as U.S. healthcare spending is projected to approach $9 trillion by 2034, exceeding 20% of U.S. GDP, per Centers of Medicare & Medicaid, while the sector still represents a relatively small share of 8.9% of the S&P 500, according to Bloomberg data, highlighting what Tema sees as an underappreciated AI opportunity.
Tema pointed to growing private investment in healthcare AI and predictions that advances in biology could accelerate dramatically with AI adoption. According to HLTH portfolio manager David Song, AI has the potential to improve nearly every stage of healthcare, from accelerating drug development and increasing clinical success rates to enabling earlier disease detection, greater treatment precision and more efficient patient care, making active management critical in a scientifically complex sector.
