The trading activity of members of Congress continues to draw attention from retail investors. A Senator selling more stocks than buying could be something for investors to watch.
Senator Shelley Moore Capito Sells Stocks
Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) recently disclosed selling multiple stocks, as reported by the Benzinga Government Trades page.
The senator sold positions in Cisco, Intel and Citigroup stock. Sales in three other stocks are drawing attention as they were done before shares climbed higher.
- July 21: Sold $1,000 to $15,000 in Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) stock
- July 21: Sold $1,000 to $15,000 in Coca-Cola (NYSE:KO) stock
- July 21: Sold $15,000 to $50,000 in Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) stock
The trades were all listed as being done by spouse and as partial sales, which means the senator may not have known about the transactions and that her and her husband still own shares.
Apple stock traded as high as $329.60 on July 21. Eight days later the stock hit an all-time high of $344.57.
Coca-Cola stock did the same thing. Shares traded as high as $82.40 on July 21 and then hit new all-time highs of $90.92 on July 29.
The two stocks sold by the senator hitting all-time highs after the sales could show investors that while trading by members of congress draws attention for positive and profitable trades most of the time, there are also trades made that could have been better.
Microsoft stock traded as high as $401.47 on July 21. The stock failed to hit an all-time high since, but with shares at $502.95 now, the stock is up over 25% since the senator sold.
There are no buys of Apple, Coca-Cola or Microsoft stock reported by Capito, which means the stocks may have been owned for many years. A 2025 filing showed the following positions in the three stocks, as reported by Quiver Quantitative:
- Apple: $100,000 to $200,000 in stock owned by spouse
- Microsoft: $165,000 to $400,000 in stock owned by spouse
- Microsoft: $3,000 to $45,000 in stock owned by self
- Coca-Cola: $16,000 to $65,000 in stock owned by spouse
- Coca-Cola: $1,000 to $15,000 in stock owned by self
Capito’s Trading History
Capito has a listed net worth of $5.07 million and has made over $5.75 million in stock trades since 2015, according to data from Quiver Quantitative.
In the most recent years, Capito has been selling more stocks than buying. This is true of 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025.
In 2025, the senator had $651,000 in transactions, with $522,000 in sales. In 2026 to date, the senator has made $40,000 in buys and $161,000 in sales.
Benzinga previously shared that Capito sold Apple, Alphabet and Microsoft stock in December, before the end of last year.
While those Magnificent Seven stocks were sold, a look at Capito’s trading history showed the senator or her husband, buying Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) stock multiple times in 2025 with no sales.
- Nov. 13: Bought $1,000 to $15,000 in META stock
- July 29: Bought $1,000 to $15,000 in META stock
- March 26: Bought $1,000 to $15,000 in META stock
- Feb. 25: Bought $1,000 to $15,000 in META stock
The senator has still not sold any Meta stock over the last year, which could mean her and her husband prefer that Magnificent Seven stock for the long term.
