SpaceX (NASDAQ:SPCX) is set to launch 29 Starlink satellites from Cape Canaveral on Monday using a Falcon 9 booster that has already flown 17 times.
Liftoff is scheduled for 10:49 a.m. ET. If all goes well, booster B1085 will land on a droneship in the Atlantic about eight minutes later.
By SpaceX standards, 18 flights is routine. A different booster, B1067, flew for a record 36th time last month.
That routineness is the foundation of SpaceX’s business. Reflying rockets instead of discarding them helps the company launch more frequently while lowering the cost of each mission.
NASA Proved Reuse Was Possible, but Not Cheap or Rapid
Reusable spacecraft are not a new idea.
NASA’s Space Shuttle flew its orbiters and solid rocket boosters again and again for three decades, and Discovery alone racked up 39 missions, more than any Falcon 9 booster has managed to date.
The problem was that Shuttle processing remained expensive and slow.
NASA originally envisioned two-week turnarounds but never managed one faster than 55 days, and a NASA analysis later put the cost at roughly $1.5 billion per launch. A Falcon 9 launch costs about $74 million today.
Flight-Proven Hardware Is Now the Norm
SpaceX said in a recent SEC filing it had completed around 650 orbital launches, more than 540 of them using flight-proven Falcon rockets. Building a fresh booster for every mission stopped being the company’s normal operating model years ago.
The result is a cadence no one else comes close to matching. Saturday’s Starlink flight from California was already the 92nd Falcon 9 mission of 2026, and Monday’s would be No. 93. Europe, by comparison, has attempted 334 space launches since 1970.
Kalshi traders are predicting that SpaceX manages 156 launches this year.
China Is Trying to Land What SpaceX Now Reuses
Rivals are chasing the same architecture. Blue Origin has recovered and reflown a New Glenn booster, and Rocket Lab is designing its upcoming Neutron rocket around a reusable first stage.
The most direct imitation is happening in China.
LandSpace’s Zhuque-3, a methane-fueled rocket with capabilities similar to Falcon 9’s, is targeting Monday for its second landing attempt, after the first ended with the booster exploding during its final powered descent in December.
China successfully recovered a different orbital booster using a net-capture system in July, but Zhuque-3 will attempt the Falcon-like approach of descending under power onto landing legs.
Starship Is the Much Bigger Bet
Falcon 9 still throws away its upper stage every flight. Starship is SpaceX’s attempt to reuse the entire rocket, and everything the company has promised rests on it: the NASA contract to land astronauts on the Moon, and Musk’s ambition to reach Mars.
A Polymarket contract with roughly $120,000 traded currently gives a 57% chance that SpaceX or Musk will declare Starship’s upper stage fully reusable before 2027.
Monday’s mission is unlikely to look revolutionary, and that may be the point. For SpaceX, making reusable rockets work was the technological breakthrough. Making them boring may be the bigger competitive achievement.
