U.S. stocks traded lower midway through trading, with the Dow Jones index falling over 100 points on Friday.

The Dow traded down 0.26% to 53,701.92 while the NASDAQ fell 0.51% to 26,665.88. The S&P 500 also fell, dropping, 0.24% to 7,780.42.

Leading and Lagging Sectors

Energy shares jumped by 1.3% on Friday.

In trading on Friday, information technology stocks fell by 0.6%.

The University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment index declined to 51 in early August, compared to 55.2 in the previous month and missing market estimates of 54.5.

  • Eton Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ETON) shares shot up 39% to $56.68 after the company reported better-than-expected quarterly financial results and issued FY26 revenue guidance above estimates.
  • Shares of Valneva SE (NASDAQ:VALN) got a boost, surging 25% to $7.04 after the company announced that the European Medicines Agency has validated the Marketing Authorization Application for PF-07307405.
  • MDxHealth SA (NASDAQ:MDXH) shares were also up, gaining 80% to $0.83 after the company reported better-than-expected second-quarter sales results and affirmed its FY26 sales guidance above estimates.

Equities Trading DOWN

  • Innventure Inc (NASDAQ:INV) shares dropped 49% to $1.84 after the company reported mixed quarterly financial results.
  • Shares of KinderCare Learning Companies Inc (NYSE:KLC) were down 31% to $3.35 after the company reported worse-than-expected second-quarter financial results and cut its FY26 guidance below estimates.
  • Microvision Inc (NASDAQ:MVIS) was down, falling 46% to $2.02 after the company announced a $17 million offering of 6.8 million units at $2.50 per unit.

Commodities

In commodity news, oil traded up 0.4% to $81.55 while gold traded up 0.7% at $4,450.60.

Silver traded up 0.3% to $65.21 on Friday, while copper rose 0.1% to $6.6095.

Euro zone

European shares were mostly lower today. The eurozone’s STOXX 600 fell 0.2%, while Spain’s IBEX 35 Index slipped 0.1% London’s FTSE 100 fell 0.2%, Germany’s DAX gained 0.5%, while France’s CAC 40 slipped 0.2%.

Asia Pacific Markets

Asian markets closed mixed on Friday, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 gaining 0.59%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index falling 1.10%, China’s Shanghai Composite rising 0.01% and India’s BSE Sensex falling 0.09%.

Economics

  • U.S. retail sales declined 0.6% month-over-month in July, following a 0.2% gain in June and missing market estimates of a 0.1% rise.
  • The University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment index declined to 51 in early August, compared to 55.2 in the previous month and missing market estimates of 54.5.
