Target Corp. (NYSE:TGT) stock traded lower on Monday, as investors exercised caution and took profits ahead of the company’s second-quarter earnings report on Wednesday.

Broader market sentiment faced pressure following new economic data released on Friday by the U.S. Census Bureau showing that U.S. retail sales dropped 0.6% in July to $763.6 billion.

The fall missed consensus expectations of a 0.1% increase and marked the largest monthly decline since May 2025.

The Nasdaq is down 0.10% while the S&P 500 has shed 0.38%, and market breadth is soft with only 3 sectors advancing versus 8 declining.

Retail Sales Decline Weighs On Sentiment

Market commentator The Kobeissi Letter noted on X on Sunday, “US consumers are pulling back on spending: US retail sales dropped -0.6% in July, the largest monthly decrease since May 2025, missing expectations of a +0.1% increase.” Nonstore retailers, including Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), saw a 2.2% drop, while control-group sales fell 0.4%.

Analyst Expectations And Guidance

Despite broader headwinds, Bank of America Securities reiterated an Underperform rating on Target on Wednesday, while raising its price forecast to $124 from $110.

Analyst Christopher Nardone expects second-quarter adjusted earnings per share of $2.34 on net sales of $26.10 billion, alongside comparable sales growth of 2.5%.

Consumer Trends And Margin Outlook

Target has expanded product partnerships, including collaborations with Pokémon, LoveShackFancy and Hollister, to attract shoppers.

However, corporate commentary from Walmart Inc. (NYSE:WMT) highlighted budget-conscious behavior among lower-income consumers, framing a challenging backdrop ahead of Wednesday’s report.

Target Stock: Key Technical Levels To Watch

Even with Monday’s pullback, Target is still in a clear longer-term uptrend: it’s trading 3.9% above the 20-day SMA ($146.47), 10% above the 50-day SMA ($138.27), and 29.5% above the 200-day SMA ($117.50). That “stacked” moving-average setup typically signals buyers have been in control on multi-week and multi-month timeframes.

The bigger technical question is whether price can hold up near recent highs after a strong 12-month run (up 44.95%) and a swing high in August. With the 52-week high at $156.47 and the stock at $152.19, traders will watch if this dip stays a routine pullback or turns into a deeper mean reversion toward the 20-day/50-day area.

TGT Stock Price Activity: Target shares were down 1.41% at $152.30 at the time of publication on Monday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
