The CNN Money Fear and Greed Index showed another decline in overall market sentiment, while the index remained in the “Greed” zone on Monday.

U.S. stocks settled lower on Monday, with the Dow Jones index falling more than 250 points during the session amid rising concerns in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, stocks closed mixed last week, with the S&P 500 gaining 0.4% and the Nasdaq rising by 0.1%. The Dow, however, fell 0.6% last week.

On the economic data front, the New York Fed’s Empire State Manufacturing Index surged to 20.6 in August from a reading of 15.6 in the previous month and toppped market estimates of 11. The NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index rose to 35 in August from 34 in the previous month.

On the earnings front, shares of INVO Fertility Inc. (NASDAQ:IVF) jumped over 60% on Monday after the company reported better-than-expected second-quarter EPS results.

Most sectors on the S&P 500 closed on a negative note, with communication services, consumer staples and financial stocks recording the biggest losses on Monday. However, energy stocks bucked the overall market trend, closing the session higher.

The Dow Jones closed lower by around 273 points to 53,459.78 on Monday. The S&P 500 fell 0.52% to 7,745.06, while the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.32% at 26,644.91 during Monday’s session.

Investors are awaiting earnings results from Home Depot Inc. (NYSE:HD), Amer Sports Inc. (NYSE:AS) and Toll Brothers Inc (NYSE:TOL) today.

At a current reading of 59.9, the index remained in the “Greed” zone on Monday, versus a prior reading of 64.

The Fear & Greed Index is a measure of the current market sentiment. It is based on the premise that higher fear exerts pressure on stock prices, while higher greed has the opposite effect. The index is calculated based on seven equal-weighted indicators. The index ranges from 0 to 100, where 0 represents maximum fear and 100 signals maximum greed.
