Chronicle Bio, Inc. cofounder Fidji Simo said AI could eventually cure all diseases, but warned that smarter models alone will not be enough to turn that potential into medical treatments.

In a post on X Monday, Simo wrote that she "disagrees with Dario on most things," but said his point about AI needing to deliver actual medical breakthroughs was "spot on." She was responding to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s comments that saying AI will cure cancer has become a cliché and that the industry needs to actually deliver cures.

Simo Points to Biological Data

Simo said people often draw a direct line between increasingly capable AI models and medical cures without accounting for the infrastructure needed in between.

She said the regulatory bottleneck receives significant attention, but argued that the larger bottleneck in many areas is the lack of the right biological data.

Simo said she is particularly bullish on AI making significant progress in cancer because decades of investment have created large datasets covering genomics, pathology, imaging and clinical outcomes.

For complex chronic diseases, she said much of that infrastructure does not yet exist. She pointed to companies including ChronicleBio as working to build the necessary data infrastructure.

Amodei Calls for Real Medical Breakthroughs

Simo’s comments came after Amodei said AI could help cure most human diseases within five to 10 years.

Amodei said the AI industry needs to deliver real breakthroughs in medicine and biology rather than rely on optimistic messaging. He argued that actually curing cancer would do more to build public trust than simply promising that AI could eventually do so.

Amodei has also pointed to the need for regulatory changes that could allow health care systems to keep pace with AI-driven advances in medicine.

AI Meets Programmable Medicine

The potential convergence of AI and biotechnology has also been highlighted by Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) and Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:SPCX) CEO Elon Musk, who said advances in synthetic RNA could make medicine increasingly programmable.

Musk said custom RNA could allow researchers to program biological instructions and potentially treat a wide range of diseases. RNA-based therapies are already being tested across areas including cancer, HIV, influenza, cardiovascular disease and rare inherited disorders.

AI is also being used to help optimize RNA sequences, while researchers are exploring approaches including personalized cancer vaccines.

Simo said the next stage will require model intelligence and biological infrastructure to scale together. Without that infrastructure, she warned that increasingly capable AI could still have an incomplete picture of human biology and delay the development of cures.

Simo previously stepped down from her full-time role as OpenAI’s president of applications and moved to a part-time advisory position while focusing on her recovery. She said she remained committed to working toward disease cures through OpenAI and her work with ChronicleBio and CODA Research.
