Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) CEO Elon Musk hinted at a new high-capacity vehicle after highlighting the Cybertruck’s family-friendly seating, telling a fan on X that “something way cooler than a minivan” may be on its way.
Musk Fuels Speculation Around Bigger Tesla
Musk made the comment after saying, "The Cybertruck rear bench has three sets of isofix attachments and is wide enough to fit three child seats or three adults." A user responded, "MAKE A MINIVAN, ELON," prompting Musk’s cryptic reply.
Musk offered no name, specifications or production timeline, leaving open whether he meant a Cybertruck-inspired SUV, another family vehicle or Tesla’s already unveiled Robovan. The exchange follows his previous acknowledgment of calls for larger Teslas for bigger families.
Robovan Reflects Tesla’s Longstanding Transport Ambitions
The Robovan provides the clearest confirmed reference point. Tesla unveiled the 20-seat vehicle alongside the Cybercab at its "We, Robot" event in October 2024. Tesla now describes the autonomous vehicle as transport for "groups or goods, from mass transit to construction to food service." The company has not announced its price or production date.
The idea also echoes Tesla’s decade-old plans. Its 2016 "Master Plan, Part Deux" identified "high passenger-density urban transport" as a category ripe for electrification and envisioned autonomous smaller buses carrying passengers directly to their destinations.
Model Y L Broadens Tesla Family Lineup
Tesla has meanwhile expanded its conventional family lineup. The company launched the long-wheelbase Model Y L in the U.S. in July with three rows and six seats. Tesla currently lists the Model Y L Premium from $61,990, with second-row captain’s chairs and an estimated 325 miles of range.
Tesla is also pushing deeper into autonomy. Its two-seat Cybercab has no steering wheel or pedals, while a 2026 regulatory filing said Tesla had begun pilot production.
As things stand, Musk’s "way cooler" vehicle remains unidentified. But Tesla’s Robovan, Cybercab and expanded Model Y lineup suggest the answer may look nothing like the sliding-door minivan fans requested.
Benzinga’s Edge Rankings show the TSLA stock underperforming across Short-, Medium-, and Long-term trends.
