Elon Musk on Wednesday encouraged an X user to test Grok Bot with access to personal finances, saying his company would cover the user if the artificial intelligence agent made a mistake.
Musk Backs Grok Bot With Bold Pledge
"Try it out. If Grok Bot messes up, we will make you whole," Musk wrote Wednesday after a popular Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) and Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:SPCX) account in Teslaconomics said he was considering connecting Grok Bot to a bank account to track spending, move money, pay bills and flag unusual charges. The user said his partner strongly opposed giving an AI that level of access.
The exchange comes barely two weeks after SpaceXAI launched Grok Bot in beta on Aug. 11. SpaceXAI describes the product as a team of "always-on" agents with cloud computers that can sign into websites, work across apps and complete jobs before returning when human approval is needed.
SpaceXAI specifically lists expense management among Grok Bot’s uses. Its documentation also recommends requiring approval for purchases and financial transfers.
Grok Bot Expands Into Financial Tasks
Musk’s promise, however, goes further than SpaceXAI’s published consumer terms. The terms say Grok may interact with third-party services, "including financial institutions," but make users responsible for agent actions. They generally limit SpaceXAI’s liability to the greater of fees paid or $100, except in cases of gross negligence or willful misconduct.
Musk has become increasingly bullish on Grok in recent months. Ahead of Grok 4.5’s July release, he called it an "Opus-class model" that was faster and cheaper than Anthropic’s competing system. SpaceXAI positioned the model as its most intelligent offering at launch. The model has also drawn attention for its lower-cost enterprise ambitions.
Musk Keeps Raising Stakes Around Grok
SpaceXAI followed with Grok 4.6 in August, targeting longer and more complex tasks.
It is worth noting that Grok is already handling real-world transactions elsewhere. Musk earlier this week said Grok Voice operates "at scale for support & sales" at Starlink, where SpaceXAI says it handles more than 15,000 inbound calls daily and fulfills over 3,000 orders weekly.
