U.S. stocks traded mixed midway through trading, with the Dow Jones index gaining around 100 points on Friday.
The Dow traded up 0.19% to 53,671.64 while the NASDAQ slipped 0.25% to 26,474.56. The S&P 500 also fell, dropping, 0.06% to 7,726.07.
Leading and Lagging Sectors
Consumer discretionary shares jumped by 1.6% on Friday.
In trading on Friday, industrials stocks fell by 1%.
Top Headline
The University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment index rose to 51.7 in August versus a preliminary reading of 51.0.
Equities Trading UP
- Elastic NV (NYSE:ESTC) shares shot up 17% to $98.31 as the company reported better-than-expected first-quarter financial results and raised its FY27 guidance.
- Shares of Solstice Advanced Materials Inc (NASDAQ:SOLS) got a boost, surging 16% to $65.57 after the company announced a mutual termination of its merger agreement with Element. Also, the company authorized a $500 million share repurchase program.
- Gap Inc (NYSE:GAP) shares were also up, gaining 15% to $23.95 as the company reported better-than-expected second-quarter earnings and raised their FY26 EPS guidance above estimates.
Equities Trading DOWN
- FinVolution Group (NYSE:FINV) shares dropped 15% to $3.44 after the company announced second-quarter results.
- Shares of PayPal Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:PYPL) were down 12% to $54.33 following reports suggesting that a consortium of Advent and Stripe walked away from its pursuit of PayPal.
- Rubrik Inc (NYSE:RBRK) was down, falling 11% to $95.64 following second-quarter results.
Commodities
In commodity news, oil traded down 0.5% to $83.14 while gold traded down 2.2% at $4,561.40.
Silver traded down 2.1% to $68.00 on Friday, while copper fell 0.8% to $6.5653.
Euro zone
European shares were higher today. The eurozone’s STOXX 600 gained 0.4%, while Spain’s IBEX 35 Index rose 0.7%, London’s FTSE 100 rose 0.2%, Germany’s DAX gained 0.5%, while France’s CAC 40 jumped 1%.
Asia Pacific Markets
Asian markets closed mostly higher on Friday, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 gaining 0.41%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index gaining 0.08%, China’s Shanghai Composite falling 0.11% and India’s BSE Sensex gaining 0.43%.
Economics
- The Chicago Business Barometer dipped to 47.1 in August from 57.6 in the previous month and also missing market estimates of 58.3.
- The University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment index rose to 51.7 in August versus a preliminary reading of 51.0.
