Elon Musk said humanity will need to move unprecedented material into space to establish a lasting presence on the Moon and Mars, casting Space Exploration Technologies Corp.’s (NASDAQ:SPCX) Starship as the transport system meant to make that scale possible.

Musk Frames Multiplanetary Future Around Payload Scale

"Extending consciousness to the Moon and Mars takes a lot of mass," Musk wrote Sunday on X, replying to a post arguing that SpaceX’s future payload capacity could dwarf humanity’s cumulative launch mass since Sputnik.

The post cited an estimate of more than 22,000 metric tons of usable payload placed in space since 1957 and extrapolated Musk’s August target of "30+ Starship launches/day in 2030, which is ~10k annualized." At 100 tons per launch, that hypothetical cadence would equal 3,000 tons daily.

The comparison remains illustrative because SpaceX has not demonstrated anything close to that rate. Musk’s 30-plus-launches-per-day target would represent an extraordinary jump from current launch activity.

SpaceX says Starship is designed to carry more than 100 metric tons to orbit in a fully reusable configuration. In its prospectus, the company said it expects Starship V3 to carry 100 metric tons, while future generations could reach 200 metric tons, potentially as soon as Starship V4. The company also says orbital refueling could further extend the vehicle’s ability to move large amounts of cargo beyond Earth orbit to the Moon and Mars.

Starship Targets Unprecedented Launch Cadence By 2030

Musk has raised his cadence ambitions. In February, he said Starship could eventually launch "every hour", while in August he set the 30-plus-per-day 2030 target. He has also backed new spaceports to support thousands of flights per year.

Moon And Mars Plans Depend On Reusability

The payload argument fits SpaceX’s lunar push. Musk has said the company wants Moon travel open to "anyone", while SpaceX says Starship could support a Moon base and cargo missions to the lunar and Martian surfaces. Musk has also insisted Mars remains central, saying in July, "I will not forget about Mars".

Starship still has major milestones ahead. The company reported that Flight 13 in July briefly deployed 20 Starlink V3 satellites into suborbital space. SpaceX has spent more than $15 billion developing the vehicle.

Full reusability and rapid turnaround remain critical to Musk’s projected flight rates. SpaceX says Starship and Super Heavy are designed to return and fly again without refurbishment.
