Elon Musk said Anthropic‘s most extreme AI-growth scenario could become achievable once humanoid robots reach volume production, arguing that artificial intelligence (AI) paired with physical automation could transform the economy beyond knowledge work.
Musk Says Robots Could Unlock Extreme Growth
Reacting Wednesday to a Polymarket post highlighting Anthropic’s economic scenario explorer, Musk wrote, "That will be certainly be true when humanoid robots reach volume production." The post referenced Anthropic’s extreme case, which models annual U.S. GDP growth reaching roughly 15%, enough to double the economy every 4.5 years.
Anthropic stresses that the scenario is conditional rather than being a forecast. It assumes AI becomes more productive than humans at most knowledge-work tasks, performs nearly all of them autonomously and creates essentially no new knowledge tasks for people. The company says that path would likely require recursively self-improving AI and rapid adoption.
Anthropic Models Bigger Economy, Smaller Labor Share
Under those assumptions, Anthropic estimates U.S. GDP could reach $44.4 trillion in 2030, 32.4% above its no-AI baseline. But labor’s share of output falls to 45.2% from roughly 60%, while capital captures 54.8%. Knowledge-worker wages also fall and unemployment rises beyond typical recessionary levels.
Anthropic acknowledges a significant limitation that its model does not include scenarios involving "hyper-capable robots." That makes Musk’s response particularly relevant because Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) is attempting to extend AI into physical work through Optimus.
Tesla Optimus Extends Musk’s Automation Thesis
Tesla describes Optimus as a general-purpose autonomous humanoid designed for unsafe, repetitive, or boring tasks. Its first-generation production lines are being installed in anticipation of volume production, according to Tesla’s first-quarter update in April.
The company has already converted former Model S and Model X production space in Fremont for Optimus, although Musk has cautioned that initial production will be "extremely slow." He has also described Optimus as potentially Tesla’s biggest-ever product.
Musk separately made an even broader prediction Wednesday when he posted, saying, "AI+robots will more than double the global economy in less than 10 years."
Anthropic’s comparison with 10,980 Americans found that the median/typical assumptions were closer to the substantial scenario, implying GDP roughly 10% higher by 2030 and unemployment near 5%. About 10% of supplied assumptions matched the extreme case.
