Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:SPCX) has won Federal Communications Commission approval to provide international telecommunications services as the company builds Starlink Mobile toward direct-to-phone 5G connectivity.
FCC Approval Expands Starlink’s Global Mobile Reach
The FCC granted Space Exploration Holdings LLC global facilities-based and resale authority under Section 214 on Thursday. SpaceX’s application says it sought the authorization "to support Starlink Mobile service offerings" and provide international telecommunications to markets served by Starlink entities.
The approval does not itself authorize Starlink Mobile in every foreign market; SpaceX still needs local spectrum and telecom permissions. But it strengthens the company’s ability to carry international traffic as its satellite-to-phone footprint expands.
Starlink Mobile supplements terrestrial networks through partners including T-Mobile US Inc. (NASDAQ:TMUS), KDDI, Rogers and operators across Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines. SpaceX says about 650 direct-to-mobile satellites are in orbit, with the network positioned to reach about 1.9 billion people across six continents.
Starlink Mobile V2 Targets Full 5G
The company is preparing a larger technology jump. Starlink says its next-generation Mobile V2 satellites will deliver about 20 times the throughput of first-generation spacecraft and, "in most environments," provide full 5G cellular connectivity comparable to terrestrial service, according to the company’s website. A SpaceX SEC filing says the system is designed to provide 5G connectivity to unmodified phones and IoT devices.
That push follows SpaceX’s acquisition of about 65 MHz of EchoStar spectrum for U.S. direct-to-device service. SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell has said combining the spectrum with a larger satellite fleet could make Starlink Mobile "100 times better" than today’s network.
SpaceX Pushes Beyond Emergency Satellite Coverage
Starlink Mobile has practical use cases. The service provided satellite texting during terrestrial-network outages caused by wildfires in Spain, while T-Mobile’s T-Satellite partnership uses Starlink to extend connectivity into dead zones.
Traditional carriers remain skeptical that satellites can match dense terrestrial networks. T-Mobile sees direct-to-device connectivity as complementary rather than a replacement for cellular infrastructure.
SpaceX is aiming higher. Its Starlink Mobile material says future service will support native calling, streaming, video calls and seamless movement between satellite and terrestrial networks, pushing Starlink from emergency coverage toward a global mobile layer.
