Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:SPCX) built Starlink to connect places traditional broadband could not reach. Now CEO Elon Musk says the satellite network has crossed a more consequential threshold: Starlink is "now often more reliable than cable."
The claim matters because reliability, rather than raw speed, could be what turns Starlink from a rural alternative into a broader broadband competitor.
Starlink Closes the Gap
Musk made the claim Friday on X, arguing that Starlink can now deliver a more dependable connection than cable in many cases.
There is some independent evidence behind the broader point. A Recon Analytics survey of more than 153,000 broadband users found that Starlink customers reported fewer service outages than cable and DSL customers, although fiber customers experienced fewer outages than Starlink users. Most of the Starlink respondents lived in rural areas, where terrestrial broadband options can be weaker.
That distinction is important. Musk did not say Starlink beats every cable or fiber network. His use of "often" leaves room for differences between markets and infrastructure.
Starlink’s own network has also improved significantly. SpaceX reported median global latency of about 26 milliseconds in 2025, while peak-hour median download speeds exceeded 200 Mbps. The company said it was targeting stable 20-millisecond median latency and lower packet loss as its constellation and ground network expanded.
The Satellite Advantage
The reliability argument becomes particularly interesting because Starlink does not need the same local infrastructure as cable.
A cable outage can be tied to a neighborhood node, damaged line or other terrestrial infrastructure. Starlink instead connects users through a constellation of low-Earth-orbit satellites and ground stations. That gives the service a structural advantage in places where upgrading terrestrial networks is expensive or difficult.
The network is also getting bigger. SpaceX had more than 9,600 Starlink broadband and mobile satellites in orbit and about 10.3 million subscribers across 164 markets as of March 2026.
That scale matters because every additional satellite can add capacity and coverage to a network that is increasingly becoming an alternative to terrestrial broadband.
Reliability Could Unlock the Next Market
Starlink still has trade-offs. Independent broadband comparisons continue to find fiber more consistent in many locations, while Starlink can face weather-related disruptions, obstructions and higher costs than conventional broadband.
But reliability is becoming a different kind of selling point as the network matures.
For SpaceX investors, the bigger question is whether Starlink can move beyond being the best available option where cable is weak and become a credible alternative even where cable already exists.
Musk’s latest claim suggests SpaceX believes it is getting there — and subscriber growth, network performance and churn will be the numbers to watch next.
