Venture Capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya warned that Amazon.com, Inc.’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) decision to block Meta Platforms, Inc.’s (NASDAQ:META) AI shopping assistant Muse could signal a broader battle over how AI agents interact with online platforms.
Chamath Warns of AI Agent Blocking
On Monday, in a post on X, Palihapitiya said the dispute between Amazon and Meta highlights a larger problem with the development of AI agents.
"This wrinkle is indicative of a bigger problem: the behavior of agents are still quite naive and help amplify a bunch of issues wrt the direction of AI – most importantly including those of strategy and long term competitiveness," Palihapitiya said.
He added, "I suspect everyone will start blocking everyone shortly. Plan accordingly."
Amazon Blocks Meta’s Muse AI
His comments came after Amazon blocked Meta’s Muse AI shopping assistant from accessing its platform, with users seeing a message saying the agent violated Amazon’s Conditions of Use.
The move highlighted growing tensions as AI agents increasingly handle product discovery and purchases online.
Amazon’s restriction of third-party AI agents could also help the company avoid potential customer-service and seller issues arising from purchases made by autonomous AI systems.
Meta’s Muse AI Shopping
Meta and Shopify Inc. (NASDAQ:SHOP) teamed up to bring AI-powered shopping and checkout to Muse, allowing users to shop across Shopify-powered stores and complete purchases through Shop Pay.
Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the partnership would make shopping with Muse easier, with Zuckerberg noting that more partnerships were coming.
NYU Stern professor and entrepreneur Scott Galloway said Meta’s years of user data from Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp could give Muse an advantage by providing personal context that rival AI companies would take years to build.
Muse had climbed to No. 1 among free apps on Apple’s U.S. App Store but was later blocked by Amazon from shopping on its platform over privacy, security and transparency concerns.
