IonQ, Inc. (NYSE:IONQ) shares are up by about 14% during Wednesday’s premarket session as traders react to a milestone in fault-tolerant quantum computing, even as S&P 500 futures are up 0.1%.
Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing Milestone
On Tuesday, the company disclosed a milestone in fault-tolerant quantum computing, with researchers developing and successfully testing.
The company stated it is the industry’s first end-to-end, real-time quantum error correction decoder running on a single standard, commercially available CPU.
Quantum error correction is critical to practical, fault-tolerant quantum computing because physical qubits are highly vulnerable to environmental noise.
IonQ’s demonstration shows that a single standard CPU can continuously handle the decoding workload in the background, allowing the quantum system to operate without being slowed by the error-correction process.
