Shopify Inc. (NASDAQ:SHOP) stock fell Wednesday as short-term market participants executed a “sell the news” profit-taking strategy following an earlier weekly rally.

The stock had gained Tuesday after the company announced a partnership with Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ:META). The Nasdaq is down 0.96% while the S&P 500 has shed 0.63%.

E-Commerce Infrastructure Integrates With Meta Muse

The agreement links Shopify’s e-commerce setup with Meta’s Muse personal AI agent. The integration permits users to browse Shopify-powered merchants and complete purchases directly through Shop Pay, Shopify’s accelerated checkout tool that stores user payment and delivery details. Under this framework, Shop Pay acts as the default checkout layer.

Technical Analysis

From a longer-term trend perspective, Shopify is still holding a constructive structure: it’s trading about 2% above its 20-day SMA ($138.58), about 3.1% above its 50-day SMA ($137.16), and about 8.7% above its 200-day SMA ($130.08). That "price above key averages" setup keeps the intermediate trend intact even as the stock pulls back on a down day.

The moving-average stack is also supportive, with the 20-day SMA above the 50-day SMA (bullish) and the Golden Cross that occurred in August (50-day SMA above the 200-day SMA) still in place. Traders will be watching whether this dip stays a controlled retracement toward the short-term averages or turns into a deeper mean reversion.

RSI is the cleaner momentum read right now, sitting at 52.95 — neutral and consistent with a stock that’s consolidating rather than trending aggressively.

  • Key Resistance: $156.50 — Nearby ceiling where rebounds can stall after prior pivot activity.
  • Key Support: $124 — Prior demand zone that sits closer to the stock’s longer-term trend area.

Piper Sandler also maintained its Overweight rating while raising its forecast to $180 on Sept. 8.
