MongoDB Inc. (NASDAQ:MDB) shares are slumping Monday. The company announced CEO Chirantan Desai has stepped down effective immediately to pursue a senior role at Meta Platforms. Here’s what you should know.

MongoDB CEO Steps Down For a Role at Meta

Desai’s exit as president and CEO takes effect right away, with the company confirming he’s headed to a senior position at Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:META). Filling the gap, the board turned to a familiar face: Dev Ittycheria, who ran MongoDB for roughly 11 years before stepping away in 2025, is returning as interim president and CEO starting immediately.

Board Chairman Tom Killalea framed the choice as an easy one, noting Ittycheria’s deep familiarity with the business and his continued presence as an engaged board member over the past year, and said Ittycheria “will step in immediately to ensure a seamless transition.”

MongoDB Reaffirms Guidance Despite Leadership Change

Even with the sudden change at the top, MongoDB pointed to a business it still views as fundamentally sound, sticking with the same third-quarter and full fiscal 2027 targets it laid out on September 1. The company maintained third-quarter adjusted earnings guidance of $1.57 to $1.61 per share, above the $1.54 analyst estimate, and sales guidance of $756 million to $761 million, above the approximate $745.38 million estimate.

For fiscal 2027, MongoDB kept its adjusted earnings guidance at $6.39 to $6.58 per share, above the $6.13 estimate, and sales guidance at $2.99 billion to $3.03 billion, above the roughly $2.95 billion estimate.

Investors will get a closer look at the company’s strategy soon, too. MongoDB has an Investor Day scheduled for Tuesday, September 29, running from 11 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. ET at Nasdaq MarketSite, where executives are expected to walk through where the business is headed long-term, including opportunities across developer data platforms and artificial intelligence.
