Coinbase Global Inc. (NASDAQ:COIN) Vice Chairman Ryan Van Grack on Monday the exchange’s latest CFTC approval could accelerate crypto product innovation.
Regulatory changes around custody and tokenization are removing barriers to institutional Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) adoption.
How CFTC Approval Benefits Coinbase
Van Grack said in a Bitcoin Magazine interview that Coinbase’s clearing house approval completes its derivatives registrations across brokerage, exchange and clearing.
This allows it to bring more operations in-house and reduce third-party bottlenecks.
"It opens many doors that didn’t currently exist," Van Grack said, pointing to greater flexibility to launch regulated products.
Rather than viewing direct Bitcoin ownership and spot ETFs as competing products, he said investors should have access to both.
He also expects clearer custody rules to expand direct Bitcoin access for investment advisers and institutions alongside spot ETFs.
While the CLARITY Act failed, Van Grack said SEC and CFTC rulemaking could still provide regulatory certainty and support further institutional crypto adoption.
Tokenization Could Reshape Traditional Markets
Van Grack called tokenization the biggest upgrade to financial markets since Wall Street moved from paper to electronic trading.
Blockchain-based markets could allow stocks, bonds and eventually assets such as real estate to trade globally around the clock with faster settlement, greater transparency and fewer intermediaries, he said.
Coinbase has already deployed an international tokenization hub in Abu Dhabi, while recent CFTC action on tokenized assets and the SEC’s innovation exemption could open similar opportunities to U.S. investors.
For Bitcoin holders, Van Grack said Washington’s biggest task is now accelerating regulatory clarity rather than starting from zero.
