Valneva SE (NASDAQ:VALN) on Wednesday announced that the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) officially revoked the United Kingdom marketing authorization for its chikungunya vaccine, IXCHIQ.
Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne viral disease.
U.K. Regulators Pull Vaccine Approval
This regulatory action occurred after the Commission on Human Medicines (CHM) performed an additional benefit-risk assessment specifically targeting travelers.
The agencies based their decision entirely on a review of previously available safety data. Valneva noted that the authorities did not identify any new safety signals.
The U.K.-specific revocation does not alter the product licenses for the vaccine across the European Union, Canada, Brazil, or any other global territories where the company currently markets the treatment.

Minimal Financial Impact Expected
The company initially introduced the vaccine to the U.K. market in mid-2025.
However, due to sluggish sales demand from the traveler demographic, Valneva ceased active distribution of the product in the region several months prior to this regulatory update.
Because no product remains on shelves within the U.K. market, Valneva projects absolutely no expenses related to a product recall.
Global Safety Reviews and Strategic Focus
Valneva continues to firmly believe that the vaccine maintains a favorable benefit-risk profile, provided healthcare professionals use it in alignment with approved indications and precautions.
Emerging post-marketing evidence reinforces this perspective. An ongoing pilot vaccination strategy in Brazil has already immunized over 61,000 adults with no new safety concerns emerging.
Healthcare workers have administered approximately 187,000 doses worldwide to date.
Validating the company’s safety profile, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and Health Canada recently concluded parallel safety reviews.
Management cited the immaterial commercial and financial impact, choosing instead to align resources with a strategic focus on expanding vaccine access in endemic territories where chikungunya virus infection risks remain the highest.
VALN Price Action: Valneva shares were down 3.32% to $5.67 at the time of publication on Thursday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
