ExxonMobil Blocks $5.2 Billion Kazakhstan Settlement Proposal
Meanwhile, Bloomberg reported Friday that ExxonMobil opposed a proposed settlement between partners in Kazakhstan’s Kashagan oil field and the government over a disputed $5.2 billion environmental fine.
The penalty, imposed in 2022 over sulfur storage violations, has become a major issue in ExxonMobil’s negotiations with Kazakhstan over a potential $80 billion investment to expand oil production.
According to Bloomberg, ExxonMobil rejected the latest settlement proposal and persuaded TotalEnergies SE (NYSE:TTE) to support its position.
The opposition from both companies prevented the consortium from reaching the agreement. However, the dispute remains unresolved.
A Kazakh court upheld the fine in June, but the project’s partners continue to challenge it through international arbitration.
Other partners include Shell plc (NYSE:SHEL), Eni SpA (NYSE:E), state-owned KazMunayGas, Inpex Corp. and China National Petroleum Corp.
ExxonMobil has made resolving outstanding disputes, including the environmental penalty, a condition for its proposed investment in an undeveloped section of Kashagan.
