Amazon.com Inc.’s (NASDAQ: AMZN) founder Jeff Bezos says artificial intelligence could make three-day workweeks and single-income households more common as productivity rises.
AI Could Reshape the Workweek
In a Fox News interview this week, Bezos said AI-driven productivity could allow some people to support their families while working three days a week. He also predicted that more households could choose to have only one working member, making it harder for companies to hire employees.
"Some people will decide, I can support my family working three days a week," Bezos said.
Bezos Sees AI Boosting Productivity, Cautions Investors
Bezos also said that the productivity gains could mean people would no longer need to work multiple jobs to support their families. He also addressed Amazon’s workforce reductions, saying the company had expanded significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic as people stayed home and ordered more products.
During the interview, Bezos also said that AI technology is real and could benefit society, but investors face uncertainty because funding is flowing to both successful and unsuccessful ideas.
"It’s tricky for investors," Bezos said, noting that distinguishing promising AI businesses from weaker ones can be difficult.
Bezos’ Broader AI Outlook
In a June CNBC interview, Bezos argued that AI could increase productivity and living standards enough for some families to move from two incomes to one. He also suggested that workers might choose to leave the workforce or stop working overtime if they no longer needed the additional income.
At the VivaTech conference in Paris in June, Bezos argued that AI could create a labor shortage rather than eliminate jobs. He said advances in AI could speed up engineering and product development, allowing people to pursue more ideas and create new businesses.
